Character Information

Character Name: Johanna Mason
Canon: The Hunger Games Series
Canon Point: After the Capital has captured her in Catching Fire
Character Journal: [personal profile] noneleft

Appearance: Johanna's features make her appear innocent and soft but once she opens her mouth, you find that she's anything but. She's about 5'5" and is slender, belying the strength she actually has. Being from district seven, that is known for lumber, she's very fit, with lots of upper body strength. Her hair reaches just above her shoulders and is normally a mess around her face, unless the Capital has done it and then it's long and pulled back in a crazy Capitol style. She's normally seen with a smirk that reaches her dark blue eyes and she really doesn't attempt to hide her feelings about anything.

Age: it isn't stated in canon but with the age group she would have been in during her game and the amount of time passed between games, she'd be in her early twenties. I'm going to put her age at 21.

History:THG Johanna Wikia
Personality: Most people would describe Johanna Mason as a snarky, sarcastic bitch, which for the most part is true. She's incredibly blunt and brash and isn't afraid to speak her mind, no matter what the consequences might be. This is really shown during the Quarter Quell when she throws her head back and shouts, 'Whole country in rebellion? Wouldn't want anything like that!' No one ever said anything like that where Snow or others might hear. But knowing that she might die in the arena, Johanna just can't be bothered to give two fucks about that. She also shows this when she undresses in front of Katniss, Haymitch and Peeta. She does what she wants, when she wants.

She has a very hard exterior, though given what she's lived through and what she's done, it would be surprising if she didn't. Supposedly she was one of the youngest Tributes reaped. She wasn't much to look at, small, delicate looking and deceivingly innocent, she was able to fool the other tributes in her Game into thinking she was weak and killed those she had to with an axe, effectively winning. She doesn't show much remorse for what she had to do because in the Games, it's either kill or be killed. She seems to have taken it all in stride but she just really wanted what was suppose to be hers because she won her game and with the Quarter Quell, she wasn't getting that.

She has a lot of anger problems and a lot of problems trusting and letting people into her life. Anger actually seems fuels her. We see a lot her anger during the tribute interviews. When the others are crying and making seriously veiled comments hinting at their displeasure, Johanna was the only one who said exactly what she thought about the whole thing. She made sure that the country knew how unfair it was that she was having to go back to the arena. She'd played by the Capitol rules, she'd done everything she was suppose to and there the Capitol was, trying to kill her all over again. They (Snow) screwed her over and she makes sure everyone knows that obedience just isn't good enough anymore.

She'd never openly admit it, she's not always just out for herself. Most notable fact that proves this is during the Quarter Quell when she puts her life on the line by ensuring that Katniss stays alive long enough for the rebels to break her out of the arena and make her the face for the uprising that had been a long time coming. Granted, Johanna's reasons weren't all pure but after losing everyone she loved because of the Capitol, she was willing to help Katniss.

Like all Victors, Johanna is damaged and because of this, her walls are high. She doesn't let many people close to her, exception namely being Finnick. For some reason, she has allowed him closer to her than many. But she seems to prefer keeping people at a distance. The less people she has close to her, the less people the Capitol can use to try and make her do what they want. So she keeps people out by being brash and abrasive and sarcastic and for the most part this works. It worked well enough with Katniss, in fact Katniss was pretty sure Johanna had tried to kill her during the Quarter Quell, which obviously wasn't true but Johanna had been rude and unlikable enough that Katniss thought that.

Like it was said before, Johanna stated that she has no one left that she loves anymore. It's revealed by Haymitch that Snow had killed them because she refused to cooperate with his plans to prostitute her. But despite saying that, Johanna still has relationships with others. Johanna and Finnick have an almost brother/sister relationship. They seem to rib each other and are allies in the Quarter Quell. It's obvious that Johanna cares more for him than she would admit but he is one of the few people she considers a friend. Her and Katniss didn't even like each other to begin with. Though Johanna seemed to have a bit of respect for how Katniss seemed to be standing up to Snow, even if Katniss didn't always realize it. Even when they were allies in the quarter Quell, there was still a dislike and distrust between the two. Johanna didn't seem to understand Katniss and how she could love and straight out told her that love is weird. Wireless and Beetee she looked at like annoying charges. Though she knew she needed them in order to help Katniss. She was told by Haymitch, who she knew and trusted enough to help out with trying to keep Katniss safe.

But no matter what people might say about her, Johanna is and will always be a Survivor - which she proves over and over again. Her desire to live during her Games is strong enough that it seriously outweighs any moral dilemmas or physical disadvantages she faces, allowing her to win and become Victor. She's either dumb or resolute enough to believe that there is a possibility of resisting the Capitol, despite the odds stacked so highly against the rebellion, and to act upon that belief.

Powers/Special Abilities: She can swing an ax like it's no one's business. Also she has a special talent when it comes to sarcasm and snark.

River Power: District 7 handles all the lumber for Panem and that being so, Johanna's River Power is Wood Manipulation. She can create, shape and manipulate wood/woody plants. She can cause wood to grow, move/attack or even rise from the soil and walk. (The rising from the soil will come a little later down the road when she has better control over her power.) She can revive withered or dead wood. She can only use this power around trees or areas that trees would grow. She will HATE her power.

Reason for Character Choice: Because I'm a horrible person who likes to play tormented characters. Besides, she's not gonna buy that she's in some alternate reality for a while, she's going to think she's in another game and lol playing her pissy is going to be fun.
Additional Information: she's probably going to end up arrested more than once.

Writing Samples

First-Person Transmission Sample: This is a sample I wrote when I'd planned on apping her to amat.

[Johanna frowns as she stares at the screen of the device for a few moments. She's still not sure if this is real or some crazy morphling induced dream, but she's going to go with it for the time being. Better to look like she's not about to snap - even though she'd like to put her ax into someone's face.]

So this is nice, and by nice I mean weird and extremely fucked up. I read the so-called welcome guide-- [She doesn't even try to hide the look that says what a joke that thing is.] and just let me get this straight. I'm expected to not only fuck someone, anybody every couple of weeks but I'm also suppose to get a job?

[She smirks slightly.]

So anyone need anyone to kill somebody because I'm really good at that. Also, I'm a pretty good model, I've shown off some really amazing lumber inspired dresses in my time. Oh, and I should mention that I'm really good with people. [And if anyone actually believes that, they need help.] So as you can see I'm versatile and you'd be lucky to be the one giving me a job.

I also play her in an insanejournal game and this was her intro post.

Third-Person Log Sample: Same with this one:

She murmured an incoherent name as her eyes flickered open still clouded over in aftermath of sexual haze. A smile formed on her lips for just a moment as she stretched her limbs, her body deliciously sore as though she’d just spent hours in the arms of --- her smile faded as she tried to remember just who she'd been with. Her arms dropped down, her hands sliding over the silky sheets.

That caused her eyes to snap fully open. “What the fuck...?” she muttered, her gaze sweeping over the expanse of an unfamiliar ceiling. This was not --- shit. Sitting up, the sheet slid off her body and the cool air hit her bare skin, causing goosebumps to form across her skin.

This was not right, so not right. Last thing she remembered, truly remembered were Peacekeepers surrounding her and this? This did not make any fucking sense at all. Snow would not have plopped her down in something like this. She exhaled slowly, trying to wake up fully so she could figure out what the hell was going on.

She shook her head, her dark hair a tangled mess around her face. She sat there for a moment, completely silent as she listened. She wasn't sure what she was trying to listen for, maybe anything that might let her know where the Capitol had put her. But she didn't hear anything that she recognized. Was this something new they were trying?

Overindulgence?

"Fuck," she hissed, pushing herself out of the bed. Her feet sunk into impossibly soft carpet and if she didn't know better, she would have thought that she was in her room at the training center. But even this crazy swank doesn't compare to the Capitol glitz.

She can feel panic beginning to claw its way from the pit in her stomach to her throat and she fights to keep her composure. Maybe this was a dream. A morphling dream, a morphling dream where she was fucking faceless people. Nice, that would certainly be a first. Maybe the Peacekeepers had beaten her so badly that she was experiencing some sort of crazy delusion while she was knocked out. But even she knows that's not what's going on.

Her lips press together and Johanna rolled her shoulders, pulling herself together. When she finds out what's going on, she's going to make sure that someone is missing some body parts. At least that's what she told herself.

"Katniss? Finnick?" she called out, wondering if maybe they're somewhere near enough that they could hear her. Of course they don't answer and she let out a laugh as she paced around the room, hands on her hips. "Pathetic," she snarled, reaching up to push tangled hair from her face as she moved to the window, peering out at the strange city that was unlike anything she'd seen anywhere in Panem. But those thoughts and the site before her were forgotten as her fingertips brushed against cool metal on her neck. WHAT THE--

"FUCK?"

She glanced around and then darted into the bathroom. It was round her fucking neck. Eyes narrowing, her fingers tried to hook under the band to pull it off, but to no avail.

Now she was mad... NO, now she was pissed. Who’d ever put the damn thing around her neck had to be fucking insane... Or some asshole from the Capitol. Okay so it could be both. SHIT! She stared at herself in the mirror at the crappy necklace thing around her neck and then turned on her heel and marched back into the bedroom area.

Okay, nothing made any sense to her still but she was determined to find out what the hell was going on. Maybe find Finnick and the others if they were there too. But first maybe she should get dressed, nothing would call attention to her like walking around naked and pissed. She'd get dressed and walk right out of this place and if anyone tried stopping her, well they'd end up wishing they hadn't.

same insanejournal game, so here's some stuff from there.
